“I saw Al as the future of comedy. It wasn’t just, ‘Here’s an interesting act that could sell a few records.”
– Jay Levey, Weird Al’s manager, on discovering Al
This week on The Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show, my guest is Jay Levey, Weird Al’s manager for over 30 years. In addition to managing one of the most unique and successful artists in pop music history Jay, atypically for a manager, collaborated with his client creatively. He has directed many of Al’s music videos including Eat It and cowrote/directed the stone-cold classic UHF.
To say that Weird Al and by extension Jay are responsible for just me getting into comedy would probably undersell the influence they’ve had on my life. I had so much fun recording this episode, and I think anyone who has ever been into Weird Al (everyone reading this blog?) will enjoy it too. At the risk of hyperbole if you only ever listen to one Jeff Rubin Jeff Rubin Show, it should be this one. You can get it at iTunes, YouTube, and JeffRubinJeffRubinShow.com.
Next episode - I take off the first week of any month, but will return on October 9th with Justin Wong, one of the greatest fighting game players of all-time.
